Gondola, Balloon, Don Piccard

Gondola, Balloon, Don Piccard

On August 17, 1959, balloonist Donald L. Piccard flew this red, white and blue metal balloon basket at a centennial commemoration of John Wise's Jupiter balloon flight from Lafayette, Indiana. The Wise flight was the first time that stamped letters, which had passed through a post office, were flown through the air. On July 19, 1961, Piccard launched from the Fairbault, Minnesota airport and rode the same gondola to an altitude of 34,642 feet, a world record altitude for gas balloons of this class. Don Piccard, a pioneer of post-war gas and hot air ballooning, and a founder of the Balloon Federation of America, played a critical role in the development and popularization of modern sport ballooning. He is the grandson of August Piccard, the inventor of the pressurized balloon gondola, the bathyscaph for undersea exploration and the first man to enter the stratosphere. His mother and father, Jean and Jeanette Piccard, introduced Americans to high altitude ballooning in the 1930s. His uncle, Jacques Piccard, was one of the first two men to descend to the deepest spot in the world oceans. His cousin, Bertrand Piccard, was one of the first two men to fly a balloon around the world, non-stop.

Piccard's original capsule, in which he and his co-pliots made their flights.

On 27 May 1931, Professor August Piccard began a journey that would take him a record-breaking 15.5km into the sky over the course of a 17-hour flight. In 1932 he made a second ascent into the stratosphere, going over 16km high, and he would ultimately make a total of 27 flights, eventually setting a final record of 23km. A scientific pioneer, he used these flights to gather data on the atmosphere and cosmic rays, and in doing so inspired countless other physicists. He was also the inspiration for Professor Cuthbert Calculus in The Adventures of Tintin by Belgian cartoonist Herge and, along with his twin brother Jean Felix, gave his name to Star Trek's Jean-Luc Picard.

Found abandoned in a field aged approx 10 weeks. She came to us desparetly malnourished and suffering from severe mange. This photo was taken just three weeks after she arrived in the care of GRWE. It doesn't take long for these poor little things to bounce back from their traumas, but finding homes for them all is a problem. This lucky little girl already has her new family lined up, lets hope the other twenty dogs that came in with her can soon be homed too.

Yesterday and today

Yesterday and today

The gold plated pocket watch was my wife's uncle's. When he died his estate was valued for auction and beneficiaries were allowed to take what they wanted value deducted from their share of the take.
The watch has a damaged face so deemed to be worthless and given to me.
The casio wristwatch is sunlight driven and radio controlled,, the only thing it doesn't do is talk to me, unlike my car which does in spite of me telling it to shut up!!!!

Checking the time

Checking the time

A shot of my radio-controlled wristwatch after resetting the camera's time to match. The EXIF data shows that the camera is right to within the precision of the display.

The funny little icon to the right of the seconds display on the watch indicates that it believes it is synchronized to WWVB in Colorado, and should therefore be displaying the correct time to much better than ±0.5 second accuracy.
